A Simple Guide To Merching

A Basic Guide To Merching

Here is a very simple guide to merching, I have been over the last few weeks been making money from merching and I believe that this clan could befit from a simple understand how to do this. Here is a generalised list on what types of merching that is going on, on Runescape at the moment.

  • Price manipulating
  • Item Flipping

  • Price Manipulating - I will begin with say this isn’t 100% on the right side of doing things (when I say this it is kinda a grey area in the Runescape rules. But you can always argue that it is your right to buy as much of any item but Jagex argue it is unfair to hold a massive amount of and item for personal gain) and you need a massive amount for wealth (depending on the item value around 100m-900m) to do is solo, so you find that 3 or 4 highly wealth player would do this or a small privet clans.

  • Item Flipping – This is a good way to make a little bit of money on items that other people are starting to buy for merching. The aim of this is to buy items at low and then put them back onto the grand exchange either just before it updates, (what update? The grand exchange updates its self every 4 hours, GMT time i.e.: 0400, 0800,1200,1600,2000 and 0001) for either mid of highest. If this is done right you can make more flipping then on most small merching schemes.

How To Pick An Item

Ok now you understand the basics on how to merch the next logical step is to understand how to pick an item. Most of this process is common sense and a little part of it is learning how to read the grand exchange item charts.

The Charts

Ok firstly let’s brake down the charts.

  • Date – Along the bottom of the chart.
  • Price to the nearest price increase – Along the left side of the chart.
  • Daily average – This is the daily raise and fall of the item, the most an item can raise is around 30% of the item per 4 hours
  • 5 Day average – This is the raise and fall of the item per 5 days.
  • 20 Day average – This is on items that haven’t been on Runescape for 30 days.
  • 30 Day average – This is the raise and fall of the item per 30 days.
  • 180 Day average – This is on item that has been on Runescape for 200 days and shows the raise and fall of the item per 180 days.

Ok now you understand the chart a little better you can start looking into when to buy and when to sell an item. And it is quite simple when you know what your looking for.

  • Buying – You buy and item when the daily rate is below the 20, 30 or 180 day average.
  • Selling – You sell when the daily average has gone above the average that you used to by the item and you fell that it won’t raise a more.

See like I said it is very simple once you know how. But there are some things to keep in mind and a small list of do’s and Don’ts.

Do

  • Buy and item that are used a lot in the game like Anti-poison, pickaxes, high level weapons and amour.
  • remember that a holiday items are very cheep out of session and there is a massive demand for them over a holiday period like Santa’s over the last 2 weeks in December. So plan ahead.

Don’t

  • Buy items that there is a mass of and that are easy to make in bulk ie: Pure ess, Air runes.
  • Tell every man and his dog that you are merching that item as it can open you up to a bigger clan that will have more money, then you and will buy everything of that item before you can, drop the item, and you will be left with a high amount of items that you cant sell.

Now you have a better understand of the basics of merching lets look at some ways to merch. These are ways that I have to work on Runescape also there is a small list of things to watch out for also.

New Merching Clans Scam

These are normal a great place to lose money. Normally (not always) these are started by someone from a larger clan that is looking to increase the wealth of there clan but scamming you into buying an item and demanding that you hold on to the item till it hits a price that its never going to get to. i.e.: Obby Maul was a good item that 2 of the larger clans were merching, to increase there profit they made little clans to buy more and more of the item. The smaller clans got told to bump (sell) at around 90k. But the larger clans had planned to dump at 70k.
Why is that such a bad thing? Because you had brought say 500 Obby mauls for around 60k each net worth 30m @ 90 ea net worth 45m. So you hold on to the item dreaming of that 15m profit you are going make. But because the other clans dump at 70k, you are stuck with 30m worth items which now is @ 50k net worth 25m 5m lose.
All in all I would advise if that you are joining a merching clan. You join one that has been around for a while and have over 1k posts on there forums.

Solo Merching Via Leek

Now this is a good way to merch until the leek is found out. This one works by one of your mates whom is in a large clan(to get into most large clan they ask that you have 100m in wealth either in assist or gold and lets face it not everyone can get that.) and he will tell you the hot item in the clan at the moment. This is good because you get an inside view on what the item is doing. The only issue with this is, sometimes even your mates can mislead you, and with the younger players some of them cant keep quite about anything and will tell the wrong person and get booted out the clan. This works well when it is done right, and you can get that wealth of ours up to the 100m marker and join the clan with some experience on merching which some clans like, as inexperience can sometimes stop a clan from letting you in.

Item Flipping

This is a good short term money making idea that can be completely solo to you or you can do it attached to a larger clan. It is basically buying an item for its lowest value just after the grand exchange refreshes and you hold that item for 4 hours, and sell just after the refresh 4 hours later at highest value. You can do this solo if you can read the charts well, but I would advise to try and get a leek from a larger clan and buy that item as the item will raise in price in that 4 hours. This is the lowest risk merching as if you lose value then it wont be by much it will only be by the max of 5%

Solo Merching Via Charts

This is a great way to merch, but requires you have a very high amount of gold and for you to know how to read the charts very well. It is basically buy and item till there is little to no stock of it on grand exchange and then selling it back when it hits a price that you wants it to get to, but beware if you have found an item on the charts that looks like its has bottomed or on its way up again then it normally means that a clan is doing that same thing. Without know who that clan is or what they planning to do with that item you may find your self either selling before you want to, to minimise your rise of making a loss, or being dumped on and before forced into a loss.

Five Alive Merching

This is where you can 4 friends decided that you are going to merch. Between you, you will need around 500m for this to work. OR a cut throat thirst for money. Like every other type of merching it’s all down to how you go about a) deciding how to pick an item and b) if you are willing to scam to make the item go up in value.
Again like all the other methods you get either read the charts and pick and item that has been dropped recently as they normally aren’t getting marched again by the larger clans or you get a leek from a larger clan on what there next item is going to be. Some clans have a forecast on what items they will be merching so that members can merch a current item and either collect that next item or buy as well, so knowing that information would be a sure profit.
Another option is for you and your little group and go off and make smaller clans with to scam people buy doing what it says above and that great thing with Runescape today is that you can change your name and picture on the forums as much as you wish or once per 28 days. So you can mix and match. With this as well because you have a high wealth in the item even if another clan decided to merch the same item as you, you still have a large control over that items fall and rise. So this is a medium risk.

So there you have it. A simple guide to merching, but before you run off, and throws your money onto the grand exchange there are a few things to remember.

Things To Remember

  • Jagex holds the right to change the price on grand exchange.
  • There are limits on types of items you can buy and at what amount so buy strategically.
  • prices can only rise and fall by 5%
  • There is always someone out there with more money then you so don’t go around telling everyone about your item.
  • Merching is a high risk business, so you will make losses but you will also gain more.
  • When it comes to wealth you can lose mates over it so try and remember it’s only game and merch with people who you have good friendships with that wont just let you down.
  • You need money to gain money.

And all in all have fun.

Disclaimer

I know that some people in this clan do not agree with merching and I am sorry for any offence that I may cause these people. But I have made this guide for the people that wish to know about the subject.
